Love and Non-love
Its very important for a surgeon not to love his patient too much, for that may make his hands tremble while operating. Similarly it is kind for a parent to be unkind (read: strict) while disciplining his progeny. A gardener prunes his plants, cutting them lovingly, and the plants bloom as a result of this care. When a new-born doesnt cry at birth, it is often beaten gently to make it holler. Its in the baby's best interest and in fact its life-saving at times. Similarly Divinity may sometimes appear heartless and merciless to us, in its mysterious machinations, but the harshness is only necessary, and best for us. Harshness need not always be truly harsh. Expression of such Non-Love indicates love actually.
Love is often sentimental and foolish. Non-love on the other hand is non-emotional therefore rational. Rational decisions are prudent and well planned, so they seldom fail and it really pays to lead a well planned sensible and rational life. So, in effect we need Non-Love as much as Love. Non-love may be thought of as something akin to being Stoical, but the difference is that while a stoic is unmoved by grief or joy, a person practising Non-Love does so for betterment of the Loved one. Non-love may be called deliberate detachment. In that sense it is divine.
